Procedures
Applications for Grants:
A question frequently asked of Rotary Clubs is 'How does Australian Rotary Health award a Research Grant?'
The Board has determined a standard procedure for the application for grants. Within this procedure, reference is made to the advertising in the National Press and Australian Medical Journal and RDU calling for applications.
The Board also advises the Deans of the Medical Schools at Australian Universities of this advertisement
It is the hope of the Board of Australian Rotary Health that Rotary Clubs will, where appropriate, support applications for Research Grants. If this is to happen, then Rotary Clubs will need to be informed of the Board's policy and relevant procedures.
Policy:
Whilst available funds are limited, it has been decided that research applications will be called for in specific areas of research.
* Cot death was the first field of research from 1985 - 1988, followed by Environmental Health Problems of the Aged from 1989 to 1992 and the field of Adolescent Health from 1993 to 1995. From 1996 to 1999 funds were invested into the field of Family Health.
From 2000 funds will be provided for research into Mental Illness
The Board, on the advice of the Research Committee looks to fund specific projects which can be carefully evaluated in advance and subject to ongoing monitoring as grants are expended.
It is not intended, as a general rule, to provide grants for equipment unless it is essential to an approved project.
It will not, therefore be acceptable to make grants to other Trusts or special interest organisations for their general purposes.
To safeguard the taxation benefits applicable to Australian Rotary Health and its contributors, grants may only be made to institutions listed under section 78(1)(a) of the Taxation Act such as Universities, Hospitals, Community Health Centres etc.
Any individual proposing a research project must therefore carry out his work under the supervision of such an institution
Procedures:
The Board will from time to time and on the advice of the Research Committee, determine the field of research to be funded.
As decided by the Board an advertisement will appear in the National Press, the Australian Medical Journal, RDU and/or other appropriate publications calling for applications for grants for the following year.
Full details and application forms (similar to the National Health and Medical Research /Councils) are available from RDU Parramatta or on this website www.australianrotaryhealth.org.au
Applications received are assessed by our Research Committee consisting of eleven eminent medical professionals together with the chairman and CEO. The committee meets and recommends to the Board that certain grants be made in line with funds available.
The Board approves research grants as recommended by the Research Committee and the applicants are informed of the results.
Successful recipients of grants in excess of $5,000 in any one year will be required to submit an Expenditure Statement of each year's activities.
Successful applicants must report in detail on their year's research programme. In the case of longer term projects, a detailed assessment may be called for at the end of a triennium.
