Trekking 150 kilometres over three gruell ing days from Mareeba to Chillagoe, while pushing a wheelbarrow, is not how most people would choose to spend a long weekend.
But that is exactly what a group of Cairns residents is planning with their sights sets on participating in the Tableland Regional Council's annual Great Wheelbarrow Race, from May 14-16.
Participants endure changing road conditions on the trek, from sealed sections to unsealed gravel, along with steep climbs and descents.
And there is always a need to be cautious where the road is unfenced, and cattle could be crossing.
The Railway Runners are entering two teams of 10 people in this year's race, which is designed to promote the Tableland, as well as raise money for charity.
Railway Runners team leader Katie McKay, who is lining up for her sixth Great Wheelbarrow Race, said her team was working with the Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise to raise funds for the Australian Rotary Health, which provides grants and scholarships for endometriosis.
Endometriosis is a condition in which the cells that make up the lining of the uterus are found outside the uterus. Affecting one in eight women, endometriosis is one of the highest causes of sick days and infertility in women The Railway Runners are hosting a Latin Dance Fundraiser, featuring flamenco dance by Furyus Feet, at the Vibe Bar on Saturday, May 8, at 8.30pm.
